Japan to Host Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai City in 2027
The Government of Japan, in partnership with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), will host the 2027 Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) from 25 to 29 October 2027 at the Sendai International Center in Sendai City, Japan.
The APMCDRR is the region's main platform for governments and stakeholders to review progress, exchange knowledge and strengthen cooperation in implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030.
The conference returns to the city where the Sendai Framework was adopted in 2015, carrying both symbolic and strategic significance as countries enter the last years of implementing the global blueprint for reducing disaster risk.
Japan has long been a global leader in disaster risk reduction, sharing its expertise, innovation and technical and financial support to strengthen local and national capacities while advancing international cooperation across Asia and the Pacific and beyond. With a history shaped by major disasters and recovery efforts, including the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995, the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011, and the Noto Peninsula Earthquake in 2024, Japan has consistently demonstrated its commitment to “Building Back Better”, strengthening risk governance, advancing early warning systems, and fostering private sector engagement in disaster risk reduction and resilience.
Building on the outcomes of the APMCDRR 2024 in Manila, Philippines, and the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction 2025 in Geneva, Switzerland, the conference provides an opportunity to accelerate action and strengthen disaster risk reduction and resilience across Asia and the Pacific – the world’s most disaster-prone region.

A regional consultation process begins in September 2026 to help shape the conference frame, ensuring it reflects the priorities and perspectives of governments and stakeholders across Asia and the Pacific.
