Special session

Investing in Disaster Resilient Infrastructure in Asia and the Pacific

A resilient and inclusive infrastructure system is vital to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the objectives of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR). Adequate and efficient national infrastructure is one of the most important basic requirements for a well-functioning and fast-growing economy. Factors such as urbanization, population growth and economic development in the Asia and Pacific region are rapidly increasing the need for new and updated infrastructure every year. This creates an infrastructure gap or future financing requirement for the Asia and Pacific region, estimated at approximately $800 billion annually. This gap is expected to increase further due to climate change, which increases the severity and frequency of disasters.

The session aims to identify solutions that address challenges related to the governance and financing issues for resilient infrastructure in the region and provides examples of good practices for future-proofing infrastructure.
